Ancient recordings of the Battle of Thermopylae tell of the bravery of the ancient world’s most elite warriors, the men of the Spartan Army. Raised from birth to be highly skilled in combat, Spartans lived for a chance to go to war and shed the blood of their enemies. At the Battle of Thermopylae, 300 of Sparta’s most elite joined a force of Greek soldiers to try and hold back the advance of the Persian Army long enough for the entire Greek Army to gather and meet the enemy.
Obverse fields on the Molon Labe Silver Rounds include a depiction of Spartan warriors going into battle. In the latest design, a Spartan warrior is shown on horseback riding into the thick of the fight as he thrusts forward a spear into the chest of the first Persian he encounters. Nearby, other Persian and Spartan soldiers fight in brutal hand-to-hand combat.
Reverse elements on the 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds come with the logo of the issuing mint. Designed and issued by the Intaglio Mint, the design element features a set of swirling, radial lines in the background field. The Intaglio Mint seal is at the very center, with the weight, purity, and metal content engraved on the design rim. This portion of the design field also includes a date mark struck in Roman numerals.
