The recreational use of cannabis was officially prohibited in 1931 by the state of Illinois. This was part of a national shift involving 29 states establishing anti-cannabis laws. The Cannabis Control Act of 1978 moved to push Illinois towards the legalization of cannabis, yet to take effect it needed approval from Human Services and the State Police. Neither group responded to the act. Recreational cannabis use was finally signed into law on June 25th, 2019, taking full effect across the state on January 1, 2020.
The obverse side of 1 oz Legalized Collection Illinois Rounds features a cannabis leaf with handcuffs around it. This symbolic image represents cannabis restrictions that have been pervasive across the United States for decades. Inscriptions include the words Legalized, End the War, Nature’s Medicine, and Hemp for Industry.
On the reverse of 1 oz Legalized Collection Illinois Copper Rounds we see a modified version of the Illinois state seal. This includes a bald eagle clutching a shield in its talons. Beneath the shield, we see a cannabis leaf, and beside it the dates 1931-2020. This represents the period during which cannabis consumption in Illinois was illegal. Inscriptions along the rim read State of Illinois, House Bill 1438.
