Cannabis has been legal in Colorado since 2000 when medical use was approved by the voters. 54% of Colorado voters approved Amendment 20 during the November 2000 election to allow for the medical use of cannabis. In 2012, Colorado became the first state in the US to legalize recreational cannabis use with the passage of Amendment 64.
On the obverse of Legalized Collection Colorado Copper Rounds is a depiction of the Colorado state seal. The state seal has been altered in this release to include a cannabis leaf in the bottom half of the shield, with the Rocky Mountains overhead. The design element includes the name of Amendment 64 with the year recreational cannabis use was approved in the state.
Colorado, like many other US states, has a complex history with marijuana. In 1917, Colorado was actually the first state in the nation to criminalize and restrict cannabis. In 1975, it was among the first states to decriminalize possession of cannabis up to 1 ounce.
The reverse side of 1 oz Legalized Collection Colorado Copper Rounds features a large cannabis leaf. As a nod to the continued federal stance on marijuana as an illegal drug, the leaf has hands that are handcuffed and there is a chain around the design element on this field.
