While the Labors of Hercules were a result of the demi-god slaying his family, their root cause can be traced back to the actions of Hercules’ father, Zeus. Though he was married to Hera, Zeus fathered Hercules with Alcmene, wife of Amphitryon. Furious over her husband’s infidelity, Hera cursed Hercules with a madness that led him to murder his family. When the madness was lifted, Hercules went into mourning and vowed to do what was necessary to be absolved of his wrongdoing.
Hercules is featured on the obverse of these Labors of Hercules Silver Round. In this design, the legendary demi-god is shown facing left wielding a club and wearing a headdress of the Nemean lion. This lion was slayed by Hercules and represents the first of his twelve tasks. Other details on the obverse include the round hallmarks and an elegant meander pattern.
A varied design will be found on the reverse side of the Labors of Hercules Round. The reverse designs in this series are devoted to each of the 12 different labors assigned to Hercules. Some of these labors include slaying the Stymphalian birds, capturing the Cretan bull, and stealing the Mares of Diomedes. The reverse will also include a Roman numeral and an inscription of the specific task.
