The Three Graces are female deities from Greek mythology who each represent a particular quality or virtue. Aglaea embodies elegance, Euphrosyne represents mirth, or joy, and Thalia reflects beauty and youth. When William Wyon used them for his 1817 engraving, he deviated from this traditional symbolism and instead chose the Three Graces to represent Ireland, England, and Scotland.
The obverse of 1 oz Great Britain The Great Engravers Collection Silver Bars contains an image of the Three Graces. In this remarkable rendition by Royal Mint designer Daniel Thorne, we see the three goddesses in a row wearing sandals, flowing gowns, and laurels in their hair. In their hands are flowers, and wrapped between them is a long, winding ribbon. This design is complemented by the backdrop of Greek Doric columns with rays of sunlight shining forth between them.
On the reverse face of 1 oz The Great Engravers Collection Three Graces Silver Bars, you will find the official Royal Mint seal. This design draws inspiration from the British royal arms and features a quartered shield with the words The Royal Mint inscribed beside it. Below this, the weight, purity, and metal type are inscribed. In the background, there is an elegant meander pattern common to Greek art.
