In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, the United States Air Force sought a more powerful jet to establish air superiority over the battlefield. The F15 was first introduced with the A, B, and C variants. Though the planes were built strictly as an air-superiority platform, ground strike capabilities were included in the design of the fighters.
As of 2021, the F15 is still in production and in service, and now serves in several air forces around the globe. From the F15 A, B, and C variants, the Air Force expanded production to the F15-E Strike Eagle. In the 2020s, a new variant of the F15 was introduced to allow the United States Air Forces to buy new, affordable jets that expanded its air-superiority capabilities.
