Merlin is a mythical figure famously associated with Arthurian legend and is the first character depicted in the new Celtic Lore Series. Each design in this collection from the Anonymous Mint was designed by Howard David Johnson and brought to life on these rounds with beautiful 3D sculptings from Italian master sculptor Luigi Badia.
Merlin is depicted in the obverse design of the Colorized Celtic Lore Merlin Silver Round. This design shows Merlin’s figure in a beautiful silver finish at the center with a brilliant, colorized field behind him. The tale of Merlin originated in 1136 and was written by Geoffrey of Monmouth. The son of a mortal woman, Merlin has fantastical powers as a wizard and is a dragon master. The Welsh wizard is deeply entrenched in Celtic lore and is said to have engineered the birth of King Arthur, the mythical King of England whose reign was considered a golden age, referred to as Camelot.
In the reverse design of 1 oz Colorized Celtic Lore Silver Rounds, the Anonymous Mint offers a common design element used on all rounds in the series. Here, a large Celtic knot is shown at the center. Celtic knots are common in Celtic art, but can take on many various forms. The common feature of all Celtic knots is the unbroken pattern of endless knots.
