Since its debut, the Austrian Silver Philharmonic has grown in popularity, becoming the most sought-after silver bullion coin in continental Europe. Its designs are inspired by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (Wiener Philharmoniker) is one of the most renowned and prestigious orchestras in the world. It was founded in 1842 by a group of musicians from the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra, who wished to establish a permanent and independent symphony orchestra. The orchestra gave its first concert on March 28, 1842, under the baton of Otto Nicolai.
On the obverse of each Austrian Silver Philharmonic, you’ll find the intricate design of the pipe organ from the Musikverein. The Musikverein is a concert hall located in the heart of Vienna, Austria. It is home to the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious and acoustically superior concert halls in the world. The building was constructed between 1863 and 1870 in the Neo-Renaissance style, designed by the Austrian architect Theophil Hansen.
The reverse side of the 1 oz Silver Philharmonic Coins showcases a collection of musical instruments played by the members of the orchestra, including a harp, violin, cello, flute, bassoon, and French horn. Both the obverse and reverse designs were created by Thomas Pesendorfer, the Chief Engraver of the Austrian Mint, originally for the Gold Philharmonic in 1989.
