1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra coins were first available from the Perth Mint with a $5 (AUD) face value during the 1990 and 1991 issue years. Starting with the 1992 date marks, the Perth Mint adjusted the face value of $1 (AUD), where it remains to this day.
The obverse of these 1 oz silver coins features one of a number of possible effigies of Queen Elizabeth II. The most common portrait you’ll find is the fourth-generation design from Ian Rank-Broadley and the Royal Mint of England. This effigy was used from 1998 to 2018 on Silver Kookaburras. Only the latest issues, the 2019 Silver Kookaburras, have the new design from Jody Clark. Coins issued from 1990 to 1997 have Raphael Maklouf’s third-generation design of Her Majesty.
On the reverse of 1 oz Australian Silver Kookaburra coins, you’ll find the image of a kookaburra. This iconic bird is closely associated with the Outback and is the largest member of the kingfisher species. Each year there is a new design on the reverse of the Australian Silver Kookaburra.
