The Buffalo Nickel is a beloved historic coin from the United States Mint. First introduced in 1913 during President William Howard Taft’s term, this coin was designed by James Earle Fraser. The Buffalo Nickel was the final design on the nickel before the current Thomas Jefferson design was introduced. Today, the Buffalo Nickel’s iconic imagery is used on various modern bullion pieces, including silver rounds from Asahi Refining. Right now, 1 oz Asahi Buffalo Silver Rounds in plastic tubes are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.

Bison have a specialized digestive system that allows them to extract nutrients from low-quality forage. Their four-chambered stomachs contain microorganisms that can break down tough prairie grasses. This adaptation enables bison to thrive in harsh environments where other large mammals might struggle to find adequate nutrition.
On the obverse side of the 1 oz Asahi Buffalo Silver Round, there is a bust of an indigenous figure. This tribal figure is depicted with a stoic expression and braided hair adorned with feathers. The word “Liberty” is inscribed on this side, echoing elements of the original Buffalo Nickel. There is also an Asahi Mint mark.
The reverse side of the Asahi Buffalo Silver Round features the iconic American bison, the largest land mammal in North America. This bison, shown in left-profile relief, stands on a mound of dirt with a prominent hump and detailed shaggy mane. Fraser used Black Diamond, a bison from the Central Park Zoo, as inspiration for this design.
