In Norse mythology, Hel was known as the Goddess of Death. Hel is actually the daughter of the trickster god Loki, and she had looks that were said to be stern, grim and downtrodden. Odin cast Hel down into the world of Helheim and gave her the power over nine worlds, where she eventually became of the Goddess of the Underworld.
Each of the releases in the Norse God Series of silver rounds is a proof specimen with a mirrored finish and antique highlights. The addition of antiquing to a round gives it a subtle depth in design and warmth in the features of the coin. All rounds in this series have edge lettering that indicates its position in the coining process.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Antique Norse God Series Hel Silver Round is the image of Hel, hauntingly surrounded by the dead of the underworld. She is depicted on the round sitting upon her thrown with a sullen, hollow look on her face.
The reverse of the rounds features the image of one of the members of the Valkyrie, Odin’s chosen band of warrior maidens responsible for choosing who lives and dies among mankind’s battles. The Valkyrie famously rode their steeds into battle in the skies overhead, the roar of their horses serving as thunder and the glint of their swords providing lightning.
All of these 1 oz Antique Norse God Series Hel Silver Rounds is the product of the Anonymous Mint, in conjunction with Osborne Precious Metals. Julie Lindquist of Anonymous oversaw the program, with Italian sculptor Luigi Badia bringing Howard David Johnson’s artwork to life. Osborne is the oldest private mint in the United States, tracing its history back to 1836.
