The American Wild West was a timeframe in American history that captivates the imagination of Americans to this day. The expansion of colonial America and the independent United States was a timeframe that actually ran from 1607 when the first Europeans arrived through 1912 when the final western states of Arizona and New Mexico were added to the Union.
As far as the mythical Wild West, or Old West, that period occurred uniquely in American history from the end of the War of 1812 through 1920 as the west was won over and civilized one settler, one lawman, and one outlaw at a time. In this second release of the American Western Skulls Collection, the Old Sheriff takes center stage.
All 1 oz Antique American Western Skulls Old Sheriff Silver Rounds are available with a unique antique polish applied. This polish helps accentuate the intricate details in the design field, while also giving the finished product the appearance of ancient coinage. The rounds ship in plastic capsules with a Certificate of Authenticity that matches the individual serial number engraved on the edge of each round.
The reverse of the 1 oz Antique American Western Skulls Old Sheriff Silver Round bears the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. Rather than a robust and imposing bald eagle, the skeletal remains of a “fried eagle” are all that remain behind the nation’s shield. The bird is surrounded by engravings that include the weight, purity, and metal content.
On the obverse is the human skeleton of an Old West Sheriff. The sheriff wears a cowboy hat with a badge in the center. If you look closely, you’ll see his badge reads “Sheriff” on the star, with “Tombstone – Arizona Territory” on the wheel around. Two guns cross below his chin giving the design the appearance of the Jolly Roger flag popularized by pirates in the 18th century.
