Long before President Abraham Lincoln graced the obverse of an American $5 bill, a Native American Chieftain was chosen as the representative of the nation on its five-dollar bill. The 1899 $5 Silver Certificate from the United States Mint was the first in US history to feature the likeness of a Native American.
Like many other banknotes from the US Mint at this time, the 1899 $5 Silver Certificate was printed through the early 1920s before being gradually phased out of circulation. On the obverse face of that original banknote is the image of Chief Running Antelope, leader of the Hunkpapa tribe of Lakota Indians. Though he was the first Native American on US currency, Chief Running Antelope never lived to see his likeness in circulation as he passed away in 1896.
On the obverse face of these copper bars you’ll find an exact replica of that 1899 $5 Silver Certificate. All of the details are the exact same as the original banknotes, which can still be found today in a variety of conditions.
The reverse face of the bar also features the original image used on that $5 bill from the US Mint. One interesting note about its design is the use of the Roman numeral “V” in certain instances in place of either “5” or “Five” to denote the face value.
Each of the 1 oz Copper Bars available to you today comes from a private facility in the United States of America, and ships to you in brand-new condition.
This particular bar comes in uncirculated, brand new condition, which further enhances its value and collectible nature.
