Among America’s longest running coin programs was the $1 Gold Coin struck by the United States Mint. The first gold coins were struck in 1795, but some of the most popular didn’t enter circulation until after the boom in gold following its discovery in the Carolinas and Georgia, as well as the famed California Gold Rush. Today, a Pre-1933 $1 Indian Gold Coin is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Pre-1933 gold coins earned that designation for their striking before and survival of the collection of all gold coins during the Great Depression. The government collected the nation’s circulation gold during the Depression to melt into gold bars and bolster the nation’s financial reserves.
Pre-1933 $1 Gold Coins were first produced in 1849. Coins in the Type 1 and 2 series included a standard image of Lady Liberty wearing a crown. On the Pre-1933 $1 Indian Gold Coin (Type 3), Lady Liberty wears what is known as a war bonnet.
On the obverse side of these coins is the left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Rather than the 13 stars found on Type 1 and 2 coins, these Type 3 coins feature the engraving “United States of America” around her head.
The reverse side of the coin bears the face value and year of minting in the middle, with the face value represented as “1 Dollar.” A wreath of oak leaves surrounds the engraving and is tied off with a ribbon. There are no other inscriptions.
Struck between 1856 and 1889, these Type 3 coins are all over 125 years old now. Each coin in this listing is in Extremely Fine condition, meaning that only very light wear is visible, and is found only on the highest points of the design.
