In 1856, the $1 gold coin series would culminate with its final revision, the Type III $1 Indian Gold Coin. This version of the coin was one of the last $1 gold coins to be produced by the United States. The last of these coins were minted in 1889, just a year before the Act of September 26, 1890 prohibited any further production of smaller denomination gold coins.
These Type III coins have a gold content of .048375 troy oz. as well as an MS64 (Mint State 64) grade. These certified grades were the result of extensive examination by the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) or the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service). Coins of this grade have an average appearance with only mild hairline and contact marks to mar its finish. Each coin has been sealed and preserved in their individual NGC or PCGS certified case.
The design changes featured on the Type III coin reflect the new identity emerging from within our nation. On the front of the coin, Lady Liberty has shed her classically inspired coronet for an artistic rendition of the Native American headdress.
