Many of America’s most beautiful coins were lost to history thanks to the Great Depression. With the government fighting desperately to haul the nation’s economy out of the Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered the collection and melting of all US gold coins starting in 1933. Today, existing gold coins are highly sought after. For a short time, the Pre-1933 $1 Indian Gold Coin is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Gold coins weren’t always popular in the United States. The popularity of $1 Gold Coins rose with the influx of gold following the California Gold Rush in 1849. More gold in the coffers meant the Treasury could strike more gold coins, and the public’s desire for gold was also on the rise.
Pre-1933 $1 Gold Coins were produced in three stages (types) between 1849 and 1889. These Pre-1933 $1 Indian Gold Coins were part of the Type 3 series from the United States Mint. Rather than the traditional Lady Liberty with a crown and flowing hair, the primary difference in these coins was the image of Lady Liberty in a war bonnet, also known as a Native American headdress.
On the obverse side of these coins is Longacre’s depiction of Liberty wearing her war bonnet. While previous $1 Gold Coins had 13 stars, this coin has “United States of America” engraved around Liberty’s head.
The reverse side features the coin’s face value (“1 Dollar”) and year of minting engraved in the circle, with a wreath of oak leaves encircling it, tied by a ribbon at the bottom. There are no other engravings on this side of the coin.
Coins in this product listing are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, which means that they show no signs of wear and tear on the surface. There may, however, be contact marks from minting, spotted surfaces, or breaks in the luster.
