Fides was the ancient Roman goddess associated with good faith, trust, and fidelity. Her importance in Roman society was reflected in the fact that she was among the earliest deities to receive formal public worship. Fides was commonly portrayed as a dignified woman dressed in white garments, a color associated with sincerity and integrity. In artistic representations, she may be shown extending her right hand as a gesture of agreement or pledge, or holding symbols such as an olive branch or ears of grain, both representing peaceful cooperation and mutual trust.

In the design of the 1 Idaho Goldback Gold Note, a pioneer woman represents the spirit of Fides. She is shown pausing along a trail with her young son as the family wagon rests near the City of Rocks. Located in south-central Idaho near the town of Almo, the City of Rocks National Reserve is a distinctive geological landscape formed by ancient granite formations that rise from the surrounding sagebrush plain. Towering spires, domes, and monoliths define the area’s terrain. During the mid-nineteenth century, travelers following the California Trail frequently stopped at this location and carved their names into the rocks using axle grease from their wagons. Many of these markings remain faintly visible today, providing a lasting record of the journeys made by early pioneers heading west.
