On the obverse design of the Hades Silverback Silver Note, Hades is shown in a stern pose while holding the leash of Cerberus as he watches over his realm. The underworld, which shared its name with its ruler, was envisioned as a vast underground world where all mortal souls were destined to travel after death, regardless of moral standing. Cerberus, the legendary three-headed hound, stood guard at the entrance, preventing any soul from leaving once it had entered.
Described variously as having three dog heads, a serpent for a tail, and sometimes snakes writhing from his back and mane, Cerberus represented an insurmountable barrier between life and death. Despite his fearsome nature, several heroes managed to bypass him—Orpheus charmed him with music, Heracles captured him as his twelfth labor, and the Sibyl lulled him to sleep with drugged honey cakes so Aeneas could pass.
