Note Highlights:
On the obverse of the Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note, Columbia is shown prominently in the foreground with the U.S. Capitol Building appearing in the background. Columbia has long been portrayed with symbolic items representing American identity and ideals. Traditionally, her shield and sword carried specific meaning. The shield reflected defense, the protection of liberty, and the determination to preserve independence and democratic values against both foreign and domestic threats. The sword represented strength, preparedness, and the readiness to fight for freedom and justice when needed. Together, these symbols presented the nation as a guardian of its liberties and a country willing to stand firm when its principles were challenged.
The federal district was created from land provided by Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River and was placed in a location intended to sit between the northern and southern states. President George Washington selected the final site and brought in Pierre Charles L’Enfant to design the city, which would later be named in his honor. The government officially moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in 1800, though the capital remained sparsely developed for many years afterward.
