The SS Tilawa, dubbed the “Indian Titanic” by historians, was a ship bound from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa, during World War II. Struck by Japanese torpedoes, the ship sank in the Indian Ocean, taking with it the lives of many passengers as well as 2,364 silver bars. In 2017, a secret recovery of nearly 60 tons of silver from the wreckage was carried out, later becoming the subject of much debate. Today, 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds are available at JM Bullion.

The SS Tilawa Shipwreck Salvage Silver Series offers a special chance for collectors and investors to own a historic treasure. On November 23, 1942, the SS Tilawa, a British India Steam Navigation Company liner, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean while carrying 60 tons of silver bullion. After being lost for years, the wreck was found in 2014, and the silver was recovered in 2017. This series includes both original shipwreck silver bars and newly minted rounds, bars, and grain, each piece celebrating the ship’s dramatic final voyage and the recovery of its valuable cargo.
All 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds are available with protective plastic flips, tubes, or boxes. These 1/4 oz silver rounds are the smallest option in the Tilawa Shipwreck Series, and like all other products in this collection, each one was refined from silver bullion recovered from the ocean floor in 2017 after 76 years underwater.
On the obverse of S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds is a depiction of the S.S. Tilawa and its final voyage. The design offers a birds-eye view of the S.S. Tilawa sailing through the Indian Ocean. The background includes a map chart with the course of the Tilawa in 1942 as it traveled from Bombay, India (now Mumbai, India), to Durban, South Africa.
The reverse side of the 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round comes with an image of the Tilawa. This design offers a different viewpoint of the vessel as it may have appeared during its final voyage back in November 1942.
