On November 23, 1942, the S.S. Tilawa was sunk by Japanese torpedoes in the Indian Ocean, with two torpedoes launched by the Japanese striking the vessel. This tragic attack killed 280 people and sent the ship, often called the “Indian Titanic,” to the ocean floor at a depth of nearly 9,200 feet, making it one of the forgotten tragedies of World War II. Along with 280 lost souls, the S.S. Tilawa sank with some 2,364 silver bars aboard that were salvaged in 2017. Right now, 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Grain certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service is available from JM Bullion.
Product Highlights:
The 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Grain available here comes packaged in a plastic slab from the Professional Coin Grading Service. The PCGS has certified the origin of this silver from the silver bars recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Tilawa. Each plastic slab showcases the silver grain, with the front of the certification label displaying the weight and grain. The back of the label offers certification details, specifications, and an S.S. Tilawa symbol. The PCGS only certified 1,942 of these silver grain capsules, a symbolic number reflecting the year of the Tilawa’s sinking.
When the S.S. Tilawa sank, it took with it a cargo of silver bullion bars that is valued in today’s currency at some $43 million (USD). The silver was destined for South Africa, where it was to be minted into silver coins. The wreck of the Tilawa was found in 2014 and the silver within the wreckage was salvaged in 2017. After extensive court battles over the ownership of the silver, South Africa won the rights to the silver in a 2024 decision from the U.K. Supreme Court.
Much of that silver has since been refined into modern silver bullion rounds and bars with .999 pure silver content. Whether it’s those silver rounds and bars, or this 1/4 oz silver grain, these pieces offer a deep connection to one of World War II’s overlooked tragedies.
