The obverse of the 1/4 oz Incuse Indian Silver Round features a faithful recreation of Pratt’s iconic design. It showcases a left-facing portrait of a Native American wearing a feathered headdress, struck in Pratt’s distinctive incuse style, meaning the design is recessed below the surface of the round rather than raised above it. Along the upper rim is the inscription “LIBERTY,” while thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the portrait.
On the reverse of the SilverTowne Incuse Indian Silver Round, you’ll find Pratt’s matching design of a standing bald eagle, one of the most enduring symbols of the United States. Rendered in the same incuse format as the obverse, the eagle appears in a calm, dignified stance with its wings folded at its sides. The eagle faces left and stands atop a bundle of arrows with an olive branch, symbolizing both strength and peace. The inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM” appear on either side of the eagle.
The Incuse Indian design provoked mixed reactions from its inception, with critics arguing that the recessed design would collect dirt and facilitate the spread of disease, while others found the unconventional appearance aesthetically displeasing. Despite initial resistance from numismatists and the public, the design gained a measure of acceptance during its production run, though it never achieved the widespread popularity of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ soaring eagle designs on contemporary gold coinage.
