The obverse of the 1/4 oz Proof Platinum Eagle Coin features a detailed representation of the Statue of Liberty. Created by John Mercanti of the United States Mint, this design debuted in 1997 and was developed exclusively for the Platinum Eagle series. The image presents a close-up view of Liberty’s face, highlighting her calm expression and the distinctive rays of her crown.
On the reverse of the Proof American Platinum Eagle, collectors will find a range of different design motifs. For this weight, the reverse imagery has been limited to interpretations of the American bald eagle or symbolic representations of the nation’s government and ideals. One of the most recognized groupings of designs from this period is the Vistas of Liberty series. Issued from 1998 through 2002, these coins featured new scenes of a bald eagle in flight over various regions of the United States with each annual release.
Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins were first introduced in 1997, with denominations available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes. Each weight was offered in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated finishes. Annual production of the fractional-ounce Proof coins continued from 1997 through 2008, with the 2008 issue marking the final year these smaller denominations were released.
These 1/4 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins are available in either PR or PF70 condition. Coins with this grade are perfect specimens with full, original mint luster and no visible detractions.
