Similar to its counterparts in the Proof Gold Eagle series, the 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin had the highest mintage figure in its debut issue back in 1988. The 98,028 coins issued that year remain the highest for this weight, with other high-mintage years including 1990 (62,674), 1989 (54,170), and 1991 (50,839).
On the other side of mintage figures, the lowest mintage years for the 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle include 2013 (12,789), 2012 (13,775), and 2014 (14,790). Proof American Gold Eagle coins initially had mintage caps when first introduced, but never hit those caps and the figures represent total demand for the coins.
The obverse of the 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin features the image of Lady Liberty. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907, this figure of Liberty was brand new in American history at the time and was a distinct departure from previous Greek- and Roman-inspired images of Liberty. It appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
On the reverse of 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagles is the design from Miley Busiek of a family of bald eagles. The female is depicted next to the nest guarding a group of hatchlings while a male is seen flying overhead.
These 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins have a near-perfect PF/PR69 grade from the NGC or the PCGS. Coins in this condition have full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. When buying multiples, you may receive coins with the same label, design, or year of issue. The coin you receive is chosen at random.
