America’s most unique coin design from the 20th century was undoubtedly the Incuse Indian coinage. Available only on the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle coins, this design was the only one from the United States Mint stamped into the surface of a coin rather than struck as a raised design above the surface. Today, ¼ oz GSM Incuse Indian Silver Rounds are available to you online from JM Bullion with this iconic design.
Round Highlights:
The Incuse Indian design was created in 1908 by Bela Lyon Pratt for use on American gold coinage. His design was a unique twist on the larger Indian Head coinage of the early 20th century and featured only on the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle coins. These coins were part of the Gold Eagle collection, with the standard Gold Eagle representing a $10 coin.
All other coins in the collection had denominations based upon their name as it corresponded to the Gold Eagle. For example, the Gold Double Eagle was the famous $20 coin with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Liberty design. Pratt’s Incuse Indian appeared on the Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle, which had face values of $2.50 and $5 respectively.
All of the ¼ oz GSM Incuse Indian Silver Rounds available to you here today come from the Golden State Mint (GSM). Struck on a consistent basis by the mint, this design is available in silver in 1/10 oz and ½ oz weights as well as these ¼ oz silver rounds, a 2 oz silver round, and even a 1 oz gold round.
On the obverse is Pratt’s Incuse Indian design. This left-profile portrait features a Native American tribal leader with full headdress. His figure on these rounds is surrounded by 15 stars and the word “Liberty.”
The reverse side of the ¼ oz GSM Incuse Indian Silver Round features the design of the American bald eagle. This image accompanied Pratt’s original designs and was based upon Saint-Gaudens’ design for the Indian Head Gold Eagle coin of 1907. Pratt’s design includes the addition of the national motto “In God We Trust” along with “E Pluribus Unum.”
