There are many great coin designs from American history, but few are as popular as the Walking Liberty design. First created almost 100 years ago, this image lives on today on the face of America’s official silver bullion coin, and numerous silver rounds from private mints. Right now, a ¼ oz Great American Mint Walking Liberty Silver Round is available from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
In the United States, the terms “coin” and “round” are not interchangeable when discussing precious metal products. Coin is reserved for commemorative and circulation products struck by sovereign mints, and bearing a face value that denotes its status as legal tender. Rounds in the US are produced at private mints, bear no face value, and are not considered legal tender.
The Walking Liberty design used on the ¼ oz Great American Mint Walking Liberty Silver Round was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. His depiction of Lady Liberty striding forward to the sunset represented America’s march toward a brighter future. In his original design, she wears the American flag around her shoulders, walks with her right hand outstretched, and holds oak and olive branches in her left hand.
Weinman’s original design was featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947, and is now featured on the American Silver Eagle program. The official silver bullion coin of the United States, the American Silver Eagle is the single most popular coin program in the world.
On the obverse side of these rounds is the image of Walking Liberty, with the word “Liberty” engraved above her head and “In God We Trust” featured behind her figure. The reverse side features the same heraldic eagle from the modern American Silver Eagle program, with “Great American Mint” engraved above instead of the phrase “United States of America.”
The Great American Mint is a first-class precious metal refinery located in Anaheim, California. Though it is a private mint, the quality of its bullion blanks is such that sovereign mints use them in the striking of American Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs.
