The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most coveted historic US coins. When the Morgan Dollar went into production in 1878, it marked the end of a five-year hiatus in the production of $1 silver coins by the United States Mint. Original Morgan Dollars are hard to find, but the ¼ oz Great American Mint Morgan Silver Round from JM Bullion offers an excellent option for those trying to obtain this classic design on a precious metal product.
Round Highlights:
- Newly struck in this ¼ oz weight!
- Contains ¼ oz of .999 pure silver.
- Features the iconic Morgan Silver Dollar design.
- Struck by the Great American Mint.
- Bears no face value.
George T. Morgan was an unlikely man to become one of the most well-known coin designers in American history. Morgan was a British citizen who, at the young age of 30, had gained notoriety for his coin designs in the United Kingdom. However, the Royal Mint had no positions available for Morgan.
When the head of the US Mint spoke with his counterpart at the Royal Mint, he recommended Morgan for an open position. Just a few years after joining the US Mint on a temporary basis, Morgan created the iconic depiction of Lady Liberty that would feature on the Morgan Silver Dollar from 1878 to 1904.
On the obverse side of these ¼ oz Great American Mint Morgan Silver Rounds is Morgan’s version of Lady Liberty. Created during five portrait sittings with Anna Willess Williams, Liberty is featured in a left-profile portrait wearing an ornate crown with the word “Liberty” engraved on it. Unlike the coin, these silver rounds have the phrase “E Pluribus Unum” engraved above her head.
The reverse side of these silver rounds features the image of the bald eagle found on the Morgan Silver Dollar, with subtle differences compared to the coin. These rounds have “Great American Mint” engraved above the eagle rather than “United States of America.”
Great American Mint is a private company located in Anaheim, California. The company’s precious metal refinery, custom mint, and analytics lab produces high quality blanks used by sovereign mints around the world.
