In 1913, James Earle Fraser created the famous Buffalo Nickel design for use on America’s five-cent pieces. Fraser’s design was adopted as part of a larger wave of redesigns on American currency. Between 1907 and 1909, five denominations of US coinage were redesigned from the ground up.
Fraser’s nickel design was authorized by the administration of President William H. Taft, and implemented as a replacement for the outdated Liberty head nickel. Fraser came up with a design that featured a depiction of Black Diamond, a resident bison of New York City’s Central Park Zoo at the time, on the reverse.
The obverse design is a right-profile portrait of a Native American chieftain, and to this day it remains shrouded in a bit of mystery. Many scholars and descendants of Native American tribal leaders have claimed to know the identity of the individual, but Fraser himself said the image was created through the combination of facial features from three chieftains alive at the time: Iron Tail (Sioux), Big Tree (Kiowa), and Two Moons (Cheyenne).
These ¼ oz Great American Mint Buffalo Silver Rounds feature the Native American chieftain’s image on the obverse, along with the lone engraving of “Liberty.” The reverse features the depiction of Black Diamond, along with the engravings “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum.”
Great American Mint & Refining Inc. was founded in Anaheim, California in 2011, and has quickly grown to become the largest private mint on the West Coast.
