Between mid-August and early September each year, the member combatants of the Allied Nations from World War II commemorate the end of the conflict with a day of celebration. Known as Victory over Japan Day, V-J Day, or Victory in the Pacific Day, this occasion marks the end of the conflict in the Pacific and the eventual surrender of Japanese forces to an American delegation in 1945.
The United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands mark the day on August 15th each year, while both North Korea and South Korea celebrate on the same day, but view it as National Liberation Day. In the United States, September 2nd is the celebratory V-J Day. While many combatants were involved, it was Australia and the United States which bore the brunt of the battle.
In 2013 the Perth Mint issued commemorative gold and silver bullion coins to mark the occasion. The Victory in the Pacific Gold Coin honors the soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen of both nations and their sacrifices in the interest of freedom and liberty.
On the reverse of the ¼ oz Victory in the Pacific Gold Coin, you’ll find the flags of both the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Australia. The Stars and Stripes of the American flag are depicted on the left, with the Star of the Commonwealth from Australia’s flag on the right. In the center is a powerful American eagle symbolizing America’s military might in the conflict, but also representing peace for the region as it holds an olive branch in its talons.
The obverse side of the Victory in the Pacific Gold Coins features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured here in the fourth-generation design created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint.
