The Australian Nugget-Kangaroo Series has been an annual offering from the Perth Mint since 1986. For the first four years, the series featured images of gold nuggets discovered in the vast gold mines of Western Australia. The Australian Nugget-Kangaroo collection has a number of major and minor changes that have taken place since 1986. From 1986 to 1989, the coins were issued with different images of gold nuggets for each weight. In 1990, the series became the Australian Kangaroo and featured new designs of the kangaroo annually. A curious element to its history falls between 1990 and 2008. During this period, kangaroos were featured on the reverse, but the coins maintained an engraving of “Australian Nugget” on the reverse.
