Without question, the most coveted American coin design of all time is the Morgan Silver Round. These rare coins are difficult to find in the 21st century, and the design features of the silver dollar are still considered to this day to be some of the finest to ever appear on a silver coin released by the United States Mint. It is still possible to find this brilliant design on silver rounds though, such as the ½ oz Great American Mint Morgan Silver Round, available now from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
The Coinage Act of 1873 halted the free coining of silver in the United States, and brought a temporary end to the production of $1 silver coins in circulation. When the Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced in 1878, it marked an end to the five-year hiatus in silver dollar production, and replaced the Seated Liberty design that had previously featured on American $1 silver coins.
George T. Morgan, a gifted British engraver, had come to the United States just two years before he would make history with his silver dollar design. Serving as a US Mint Assistant Engraver at the time, he created his image over the course of five sittings with Anna Willess Williams. She served as the inspiration for his now famous Lady Liberty image.
On the obverse side of each round is Morgan’s Liberty image. The left-profile portrait shows Liberty with her hair in a bun, and wearing a crown with the word “Liberty” emblazoned upon it. Engravings around her include 13 stars, for the original American colonies, and “E Pluribus Unum.”
The reverse of the ½ oz Great American Mint Morgan Silver Round features the American bald eagle with its wings outstretched, and its talons clutching arrows and an olive branch. “Great American Mint” and “In God We Trust” are engraved above, while the weight, purity, and metal content feature below.
