During the first decade of the 20th century the United States government sought to revitalize the design features of its silver and gold circulation coins. President Theodore Roosevelt initiated the movement in 1905 when he approached Augustus Saint-Gaudens to redesign gold coins, and James Earle Fraser was one of the leaders in silver coin redesign.
The administration of President William Howard Taft commissioned Fraser to redesign the Liberty Head nickel, and his creation was the Buffalo Nickel. Originally named the Indian Head Nickel, his coin design was beautiful, but the name drew detractors who viewed it as offensive. His original design lives on today on obverse and reverse of the American Gold Buffalo, a 24-karat gold sovereign coin introduced by the United States Mint in 2006.
On the obverse of these ½ oz Great American Mint Buffalo Silver Rounds is Fraser’s Native American chieftain. Featured in right-profile relief, the profile image is accompanied by a lone engraving of “Liberty.”
The reverse face features the image of Black Diamond. A resident bison at New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century, Black Diamond was the inspiration behind Fraser’s buffalo design. On the Great American Mint Silver Round, this image is accompanied by engravings of “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and the weight, purity, and metal content of the round.
The Great American Mint was founded in in Anaheim, California in 2011. It is a leading silver refiner in the United States, working to gain certification in gold refining, as well.
