Santa Claus originated from St. Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century Christian bishop from what is now Turkey. St. Nicholas was recognized for his exceptional generosity and his practice of giving gifts in secret to those in need. Over time, he became one of the most revered saints in Europe, and his feast day, celebrated on December 6th, grew in popularity. The design of the 1/2 oz Engravable Santa Shaped Silver Bar captures the classic image of Santa Claus. The modern portrayal of Santa was shaped in the 19th century by American writers and artists, including Clement Clarke Moore, whose 1823 poem A Visit from St. Nicholas introduced key features such as the cheerful, round figure, his sleigh pulled by reindeer, and his entry through the chimney.
Political cartoonist Thomas Nast created influential illustrations in the 1860s-1880s that depicted Santa with a white beard, red suit, North Pole workshop, and his list of naughty and nice children. While Coca-Cola’s 1930s advertising campaigns featuring Santa did not create his red suit (as sometimes claimed), artist Haddon Sundblom’s work for the company did help standardize and popularize the warm, grandfatherly image of Santa that dominates today. This secular figure has become the central character of Christmas celebrations worldwide, even in many non-Christian contexts.
