The Australian Gold Kangaroo Series is one of Perth Mint’s longest-running collections. This gold bullion series debuted in 1986 and was known as the Australian Gold Nugget, with reverse images of famous gold nuggets discovered in Western Australia on the reverse each year. As of 1990, the native kangaroo species has featured on the reverse instead, though the series continued to feature an engraving of the word nugget through 2008. Right now, 1/2 oz Australian Gold Nugget Kangaroo Coins are available at JM Bullion.

The Australian Nugget Series transitioned to the Australian Kangaroo in 1990, but Perth Mint continued to use the engraving of “Australian Nugget” on the coins through 2008. As such, the series has seen different names, though the Kangaroo design theme has remained consistent since 1990.
The obverse of these Australian Gold Nugget Kangaroo Coins features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy was updated throughout this program’s history, with many of the coins in this listing likely to feature either Raphael Maklouf’s third-generation effigy of the Queen or Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth-generation effigy.
On the reverse side of 1/2 oz Gold Nugget Kangaroos, there are various possible designs. Since 1990, Perth Mint has featured a different image of the native marsupial on the reverse of the coins. Australia is home to four different subspecies of kangaroos, with the Western Grey and the Red Kangaroo being the most commonly featured subspecies on the coins.
