Goldbacks debuted with the release of Utah Goldbacks, offering Americans the first form of spendable gold in nearly a century. Goldbacks are designed with 24-karat gold and feature unique designs for each denomination honoring the heritage of the state for which each series is issued. Florida is the latest state to have a Goldback Series, and it marks the debut of new denominations in the form of 1/2, 2, and 100 Goldbacks. Each 1/2 Florida Goldback Gold Note offered here is a new option in the Goldback Series. These 24-karat gold notes consist of thin layers of gold combined between two sheets of durable polymer. The Goldback Series expands with the Florida release to include this 1/2 Goldback, as well as 2 Goldback and 100 Goldback denominations.
The design of the 1/2 Florida Goldback Gold Note honors the first European forays into the Florida peninsula. Here, a young woman in the traditional armor of a Spanish Conquistador has dismounted from her horse and set her helmet aside as she holds waters from the supposed fountain of youth in her hand.
When Juan Ponce de León first arrived on Florida’s eastern coast in 1513, he was searching for the fabled Fountain of Youth, though this quest was likely secondary to his primary mission of expanding Spanish territory and finding new resources. Landing during the Easter season, or “Pascua Florida” in Spanish, he named the peninsula “La Florida” after the feast day and the region’s abundant flowering plants. Though he claimed the land for Spain, his initial exploration was relatively brief, and he would return years later only to be fatally wounded in a conflict with indigenous peoples.
