Each note is made with 24-karat gold sealed between two durable polymer layers. The 1/2 Florida Goldback Gold Note is one of three new denominations available in the Goldback Series. The Florida Series introduces not only the 1/2 Goldback but also new options like the 2 Goldback and 100 Goldback notes.
The design on the 1/2 Florida Goldback honors early European explorations in Florida. It features a young woman dressed in traditional Spanish Conquistador armor, kneeling near the legendary Fountain of Youth. She holds water in her hand, symbolizing the quest for vitality and discovery.
Juan Ponce de León’s arrival on Florida’s eastern coast in 1513 is often associated with his search for the Fountain of Youth. The popular legend of Ponce de León searching for the Fountain of Youth appears to be largely mythical, as contemporary records of his expedition make no mention of such a quest. This romantic tale emerged decades after his death, first appearing in Spanish historian Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo’s writings in 1535. The story gained traction over centuries, becoming a cornerstone of Florida folklore despite lacking historical evidence. In reality, Ponce de León was primarily motivated by the same goals as other conquistadors: the pursuit of gold, territory, and political power.
