When the United States Mint debuted the American Platinum Eagle series in 1997, the coins were introduced in the same Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof formats already familiar to collectors through the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle programs. One notable distinction set the Proof Platinum Eagle apart from the start: its reverse design. Unlike the other Eagle bullion coins, the Proof Platinum Eagle featured a different reverse design each year of issue. Among the four versions of the American Eagle bullion series, the American Platinum Eagle is unique in that its overall product lineup was later reduced. Initially, both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof Platinum Eagles were struck in fractional sizes, including 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins, through 2008. Beginning in 2009, production of these fractional options was discontinued. In addition, investors did not have access to a BU Platinum Eagle from 2009 through 2013. The series returned as an annual BU offering starting in 2016.
The obverse of the 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin displays the face of the Statue of Liberty. This design was created specifically for the Platinum Eagle series by John Mercanti and has appeared on the obverse of every Brilliant Uncirculated release since the program began. It was also used on the obverse of Proof Platinum Eagles from 1997 through 2017.
Multiple reverse designs have appeared on the 1/10 oz Proof Platinum Eagle Coin over the years. From 1997 through 2008, the reverse featured a unique design each year. The inaugural 1997 issue showcased Thomas D. Rogers’ image of a soaring bald eagle, which was followed by a variety of other depictions of the bald eagle in flight across different parts of the country from 1998 to 2002.
