When the United States Mint introduced the American Platinum Eagle coins in 1997, the series was offered in the same Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof versions that the existing American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle coins were available in. There was one crucial difference for the Platinum Eagle: its reverse designs. Each year, the US Mint changed the reverse design of the coins. American Platinum Eagles have the distinction of being the only one of the four versions of the American Eagle bullion coin series to have been downsized in terms of the total offering. The BU and Proof coins were originally available with 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins through 2008. As of 2009, these coins are no longer struck. Additionally, from 2009 to 2013, there was no BU Platinum Eagle available to investors. As of 2016, the coin is back as an annual option.
The face of the Statue of Liberty is found on the obverse of the 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin. This design was created for this series by John Mercanti and has featured on the obverse of the BU coins in every year of production, as well as on the obverse of the Proof coins from 1997 to 2017.
One of several designs is possible on the reverse of the 1/10 oz Proof Platinum Eagle. This side of the coin saw a new design element each year between 1997 and 2008. Thomas D. Rogers’ soaring bald eagle featured on the debut release in 1997 and was followed by various different images of the bald eagle soaring across other regions of the country from 1998 to 2002.
