The coins in the series originally featured .917 gold content, otherwise known as 22-karat gold. This occurred from 1987 to 2012. Starting in 2013, the Royal Mint of England increased the gold content to .9999 pure gold (24-karat).

However, depending upon the year of issue you could receive one of three different designs. The Raphael Maklouf design was in use from 1984 to 1997 and Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth-generation portrait from 1998 to 2015. Starting in 2016, the Royal Mint rolled out a new fifth-generation portrait from Jody Clark.
