US Mint Sales Figure Round-Up for September 2016

usmintproduction1aSeptember is in the rearview mirror, which means it’s time to look back at how the United States Mint’s most popular programs have performed in recent weeks. Not only does October mean a new month of sales figures to track, it also means the start of the year’s final quarter. How has the US Mint performed?

    Final Week of September

During the final week of September, the US Mint saw gains of 9,000 ounces in American Gold Eagle sales and 75,000 ounces in American Silver Eagle sales. In that final week the US Mint moved 370,000 ounces of American Silver Eagle coins, with a healthy spread of growth across the American Gold Eagle lineup as well. The 1 oz coin generated 17,500 units in sale, while the ½ oz moved 1,000 coins, the ¼ oz moved 4,000 coins, and the 1/10 oz moved 15,000 coins. (Note, figures for the fractional-weights are coin volume, not ounce-based).

End of September and Q3 Results

After the final week of September, the US Mint put out its sales figures for various coin programs to mark the end of September and the 3rd quarter of the year. Details on the major programs are broken down below:

    • American Gold Eagle coins moved 94,000 ounces in total in September to log the best month for the program since April. The 94,000 ounces moved marks an increase of 60.7% from August 2016, but a drop of 25.1% from September 2015. However, American Gold Eagle sales are ahead of 2015 overall figures with 692,000 ounces total to date, which marks a 3.3% increase of the 670,000 ounces sold through Q3 2015.
    • American Gold Buffalo coins aren’t performing as well as expected in their 10th anniversary release. The bullion gold coins moved up to 17,500 ounces sold last month, a 94.4% rise from August’s 9,000 ounces sold, but down 20.5% from 22,000 ounces in September 2015. Sales for the year so far are behind 2015’s pace by 12.6%, coming at 149,000 ounces compared to 170,500 ounces through Q3 2015.
    • American Silver Eagle coins moved 1.675 million ounces in September, 30.9% better than August’s 1.28 million. Compared to 2015 though, that figure is off 56% from the 3.805 million sold last year. 2016 American Silver Eagle bullion coins are behind through Q3 compared to 2015, with 30.575 million sold vs. 36.054 million at the same point in 2015.
    • ATB coins slowed significantly in September. Just 11,000 ounces sold in September, which is down from 147,000 ounces in August on the release of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park Coin.

    Early October Figures

September might have delivered mixed news, with sales up for some big programs compared to August but down compared to 2015, but October is off to a flying start. The American Silver Eagle sold 1.36 million ounces between Oct. 3rd and October 6th during the first week of the month to post the highest weekly sales figures for the program since January 11th when 2016-dated coins were first issued.

American Gold Eagle coins are off to a hot start in October as well, registering first-week sales of 22,500 coins for the 1 oz. weight, and 1,000, 2,000, and 15,000 respectively for the fractional weight offerings (1/2 oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz). The American Gold Buffalo started well also, moving 3,500 ounces.
