The southern state of Kentucky was the 15th state to join the Union, and became a state in 1792. Known as the Bluegrass State, Kentucky has the world’s longest cave system (Mammoth Cave National Park), the highest per capita deer and turkey populations in the U.S., and the nation’s most productive coalfield.
The state is also known for bourbon, horse racing, and college basketball. Fort Knox, Kentucky is the home of the U.S. Mint’s bullion depository, which holds more than 147 million ounces of gold.
Bullion Sales Tax in Kentucky
In Kentucky, precious metal bullion, coins, and paper money are subject to a state sales tax of 6%. There are no exceptions or exemptions available. In recent years, there have been bills introduced to propose a sales tax exemption for precious metals and coins. However, none of these bills have passed, and such items are currently considered taxable under state law.
Because Kentucky is one of relatively few states to tax such purchases, buying gold or silver is more expensive here. Despite this, there are numerous well-regarded coin dealers catering to Kentucky investors.
JM Bullion, being an out of state retailer, does NOT have to charge sales tax to Kentucky residents. Browse our selection of tax-free gold and silver products. Please note that we are not tax experts, and individuals may be liable to pay local Use tax.
