Buying Gold and Silver in Kansas

The Midwestern state of Kansas is one of the most productive agricultural areas in the nation, especially known for its wheat and sunflower fields. Kansas, long home to numerous Native American tribes, was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, and gained statehood in 1861.

Even before the first years of European settlement, rumors circulated about gold deposits in Kansas. Today, while the hope of finding gold in Kansas still lingers, modern investors find it far easier to visit one of the many reputable gold and silver dealers throughout the state.

Bullion Sales Tax in Kansas

In Kansas, sales tax is collected on sales of coins, paper currency, and precious metals. The current sales tax rate in Kansas is 6.15%. There may be additional local or county taxes added to this rate. According to Kansas state law (http://www.ksrevenue.org/pdf/pub1510.pdf), “Coins, Bullion, Stamps, Antiques and Collectibles. These and similar items sold at retail are subject to sales tax.”

Furthermore, under the law (http://rvpolicy.kdor.ks.gov/Pilots/Ntrntpil/IPILv1x0.NSF/ae2ee39f7748055f8625655b004e9335/3bb93e2d360d387a86256523006b3f1a?OpenDocument) sales tax must be collected even when such items are being purchased for investment purchases. Exchanges of currency and coins at face value is not subject to sales tax, but when the coin is purchased at rates not reflecting its face value, or when its value is based on its precious metal content, the purchase is subject to sales tax.

Because there is no tax exemption for coins or bullion, Kansas is one of the more expensive states to purchase such items. Despite this, there are a number of highly regarded coin dealers throughout the state catering to local collectors and investors.

JM Bullion, being an out of state retailer, does NOT have to charge sales tax to Kansas residents. Browse our selection of tax-free gold and silver products. Please note that we are not tax experts, and individuals may be liable to pay local Use tax.
