Stretching as far back as the early 18th century in American culture, hobos were people known to pass the day by carving miniature designs. One of their favorite mediums were circulating coinage. In the United States, the most popular coin was the five-cent piece.
It makes perfect sense that Spanish engraver Paolo Curcio, known as Mr. The, would use the Buffalo Nickel design from James Earle Fraser as inspiration for his own unique craftings of hobo art.
Each one of these 5 oz Hobo Nickel Silver Rounds features an antique finish. Though various mints approach this finish differently, it tends to give a warm and subtle accent to the finish of coin. These silver rounds are the first in a series of anticipated Hobo Nickel Silver rounds to come in 2016.
On the obverse is a Hobo version of Fraser’s Native American chieftain. Captured in right-profile relief you’ll notice the portrait of a fisherman, complete with his longshoreman’s cap and a cigarette between his lips. The word “Liberty” and a year of issue, listed as “1937,” are featured on the obverse.
The reverse remakes the buffalo’s hump from the original nickel as a mountainous backdrop behind a lake. A single fisherman sits on a dock with his line in the water, while engravings around the outside read “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and a nickel’s face value of “Five Cents,” even though these rounds have no legal tender status.
