Exhausted farmland constituted the majority of the land purchased and added to Shawnee National Forest during the first decade of its existence. Civilian Conservation Corps workers planted pine trees to aid in the fight against erosion and rebuild soil exhausted and depleted over decades of production.
Each of the 2016 5 oz ATB Shawnee National Forest coins in this listing earned Mint State 69 grades from the PCGS. Considered near-perfect coins, these products have their full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
DM is a designation that indicates the presence of deeply-mirrored fields on the coin’s surface, similar to those found on a proof specimen.
On the reverse face of the coin is the image of an eagle in flight over a rock formation that resembles a camel lying down. Engravings include the name of the park, state of issue, and the year of issue for the coin.
The obverse depicts President George Washington in left-profile relief. A staple of the American circulation quarter since 1932, this image was designed by John Flanagan. He refined his portrait based upon a 1786 bust of Washington by William Cousins.
America the Beautiful coins are struck by the Denver Mint and Philadelphia Mint within the United States Mint system, and contribute to the striking of two versions of each design released.
