The Chinese Lunar Calendar, known as the Zodiac in the West, has become a prominent source of inspiration for coin designers around the globe. The Royal Canadian Mint, Royal Mint, Perth Mint, and New Zealand Mint all strike highly sought-after coins with lunar designs each year.
These 2016 1 oz New Zealand Silver Monkey coins from JM Bullion earned Mint State 69 grades from the NGC. Coins in this condition have their full, original mint luster, but may also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws on the surface.
As part of the Early Release Series, these coins were received by the NGC or one of its approved depositories within the first 30 days of release from the New Zealand Mint.
On the reverse face of each coin you’ll find the face of a monkey staring right back at you. With just half its face peeking from the side of the coin, the playful image includes engravings that read “Prosperity, Happiness, Intelligence,” with each word accompanied by the Chinese phrasing. The inscription “1 oz 999 Fine Silver” is located along the bottom.
The obverse bears the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy was designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, and includes inscriptions that feature her name, the nation of issue, face value of the coin, and year of issue.
