The year 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the introduction of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek franchise. The concept started as The Original Series on television in 1966, and grew over time to include five television series, an animated series, and thirteen feature films.
Australia’s Perth Mint has embarked on a bold program to honor the 50th anniversary of Star Trek by releasing a new proof coin to commemorate each television series, including both the captains and their starships, as well as other major characters in each series.
The 2015 1 oz Star Trek Captain Archer Proof Silver Coin honors the final television series in the franchise, Star Trek: Enterprise. The series was on air in the United States from September 2001 until May 2005, and featured actor Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathon Archer, the man in charge of the starship Enterprise.
On the reverse side of the coin is a colorized image of Bakula as Captain Archer, complete with his uniform from the series and a Star Trek theme in the background. Engravings include “Star Trek,” “Captain Jonathon Archer,” and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content.
The obverse bears the familiar right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, along with engravings of the coin’s face value, nation of issue, and year of issue, as well as Her Majesty’s name.
Perth Mint in Australia is located in the state of Western Australia, and is a state-owned entity of the local government. Though it is not associated with the Royal Australian Mint, its Australian products are considered legal tender under the Currency Act of 1965.
