Mexican Silver Libertad coins were first introduced only in the 1 oz weight. A bullion version of the coin was introduced in 1982, followed by a proof version in 1983. However, the proof version was struck in extremely limited mintages and for just one year. Regular production did not commence until 1986.
Today, the Proof Mexican Silver Libertad is available in four fractional weights and two larger-than-1 oz weights. The fractional weights were introduced in 1992, followed by the 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 1996. There is a significant difference in the reverse design between the full-weight and fractional-weight coins.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad is the coat of arms for Mexico. In the center is the modern coat of arms, with an eagle battling a serpent on a cactus branch. Surrounding the image are 10 historic versions of the coat of arms used by the Mexican government since independence was achieved in the late 1820s.
Due to the smaller surface area of the fractional-weight coins, neither the 1/20, 1/10, ¼, or ½ oz coins feature this design. Instead, those coins only bear the modern coat of arms on the reverse face.
The obverse side of the coins bears the image of the Angel of Independence and the twin volcanic peaks named after a pair of Aztec lovers. Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl rise to meet the horizon in the background, while the Angel of Independence stands proudly in the foreground.
The Mexican Mint is the oldest facility in the Western Hemisphere, having been established by Spanish conquistadors in 1535 in an effort to export gold and silver from the continent to Europe.
