Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, California to parents who were originally from Hong Kong. Lee was raised in Kowloon and got his start in films as a child actor. After returning to the United States at 18, he gained greater notoriety as a popular martial arts actor in Hong Kong and Hollywood films.
Lee is often credited with changing the stereotypical portrayal of Asian characters in feature films around the world, and often used Chinese nationalism in many of his films. He was respected for his acting and martial arts skills, as well as his role as a philosopher and filmmaker behind the camera.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz 75th Anniversary Bruce Lee Proof Silver coin is the image of Lee as he performs a jump kick during a martial arts routine. An engraving above his image reads “Bruce Lee,” while “75th Anniversary” is engraved in the middle, while “1940-2015” is inscribed at the bottom.
The obverse side of these coins features the common image of Queen Elizabeth II, as featured on all legal tender coins from the Perth Mint. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, this specific image is found on the obverse side of coins from the United Kingdom to Australia and New Zealand.
The Perth Mint is a state-owned entity of Western Australia, and is the nation’s oldest operating facility. It was originally opened at the end of the 19th century as the final facility in the Royal Mint system.
