Each American Gold Eagle coin in this listing is a perfect proof specimen according to the PCGS. PR70 coins have their full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind. The deep-cameo designation is reserved for coins with contrasting matte and mirrored finishes. The design set features a strong, frosted finish, compared to the deeply-mirrored, clear finish of the background.
With passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, Congress authorized the Treasury Department and the United States Mint to begin production of an official gold bullion coin for the United States. Congress set the face value of each coin, and stipulated that all American Gold Eagle coins contain only gold sourced from within the US.
The coins were first introduced as 1986 issue coins, with only the 1 oz weight available in the proof version. The bullion version introduced at the same time featured the 1 oz. weight, as well as three fractional-weight coins. Today, the program also contains four weights in a burnished version.
On the obverse of all American Gold Eagle coins is the image of Lady Liberty from the $20 Gold Double Eagle, created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse of each coin features a family of nesting bald eagles, designed in 1986 by Miley Busiek.
