America has a unique hobo culture that began in the late 18th century, and picked up steam during the 19th century as a vast network of railways not only connected the nation, but gave mobility to this intriguing hobo culture. One of the lasting marks of hobo culture were engravings made on coinage of the day. Right now, that hobo engraving is coming to life on a new series of rounds, starting with the 1 oz Antique Hobo Nickel Silver Round.
Round Highlights:
- Total mintage limited to just 1,000 rounds in total!
- 1st in a new series of Hobo Nickel Rounds.
- Edge-marked with a unique serial number.
- Contains 1 oz of .999 pure silver.
- Individual rounds ship in plastic capsules for protection.
- Each round bears an antique finish.
All of the 1 oz Antique Hobo Nickel Silver Rounds available right now from JM Bullion were created by Paolo Curcio, a Spanish engraver known as Mr. The. His engravings speak to the hobo culture of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.
This particular 1 oz Hobo Nickel Silver Round bears an antique finish. Existing coins that were minted hundreds of years ago have antique finishes that, previously, only time and wear could produce. Modern technology allows mints to recreate this look on new silver rounds and coins. Antique finishes can vary, but generally consist of warm and subtle accents that add to the depth and character of a product.
On the obverse face of each round is Mr. The’s unique take on the Buffalo Nickel from American coining history. Rather than James Earle Fraser’s Native American chieftain, you’ll find a hobo fisherman in right-profile relief with stunningly similar facial features. He wears the cap of a longshoreman, has a cigarette in his mouth, and a braided rope encircles the design.
The reverse recasts the buffalo as a mountain backdrop on the far side of a lake. In the foreground you’ll notice a lonesome fisherman sitting on the dock with his line in the water as he waits to catch his next meal. Engravings on this side identify the nation of striking and the “face value” of these rounds, which reads “Five Cents.” (no actual face value)
